HEALTH
SIDS Information
Hushamok guards against serious health concerns that can arise during sleep. Our unique design is ideal for newborns and cradles baby from the sides, creating a safe and restful environment. Our alternative to the traditional bassinet enables baby to sleep soundly on its back, a key recommendation in the prevention of SIDs. While a complete medical cause of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) remains unknown, pediatricians agree that infants should sleep on their backs to prevent SIDS. Hushamok creates a restful and nurturing sleep environment for newborn sleep and beyond.
Flat Head Syndrome (Plagiocephaly)
Hushamok baby hammock is designed to conform to baby’s heads, which helps prevent flat head syndrome.
Positional plagiocephaly or ‘flathead syndrome’ can occur when a baby's head develops a flat spot. This occurs when babies spend a considerable amount of time with their head resting in the same position. In the early '90s, parents have been told to put their babies to sleep on their back to reduce the risk of SIDs. Since then experts have also noted a fivefold increase in the incidence of misshapen heads.
Babies are born with soft, pliable skulls, so when they rest in the same position on a regular basis, their head can develop a flat spot where it presses against a mattress as found in nursery furniture such as cribs and baby bassinets.
Infant Acid Reflux
To prevent acid reflux in infants, pediatricians recommend keeping baby's head slightly elevated. Without the use of potentially harmful pillows or other objects Hushamok baby hammock designs provide an elevation that will reduce the symptoms of acid reflux.
Restless Sleepers
William Sears (M.D), Robert Sears (M.D.), James Sears (M.D.) and Martha Sears (R.N.) recommend the natural swinging, rocking and bouncing motion of a baby hammock to induce sleep. Hushamok’s unique design also helps ease symptoms of colic, which often interrupts newborn sleep cycles. Unlike adults, babies are triggered to sleep by motion; as many mothers notice during pregnancy when baby is asleep during the day and awake at night...
SAFETY
Safety: Hushamok vs Amby
- We understand the importance of safety when it comes to your baby. This is why we have put together an informational letter to address the key differences between Hushamok baby hammock and Amby...Certified industrial designers have designed all Hushamok Hammocks. Hushamok hammocks have passed the voluntary safety tests of JPMA. Most importantly the owners of Hushamok are parents and we understand the importance of safety.
- Amby setup is very complicated often resulting in an unbalanced hammock, which leads to rolling. Hushamok baby hammock is simple to assemble with minimal risk of human error. If the cord is not attached to the leafspring correctly the Hushamok hammock cannot be used.
- Amby hammock is difficult to balance precisely. Hushamok has no complicated parts and/or adjustments. Once a Hushamok baby hammock is assembled there is no need to readjust the cords that connect to the leafspring.
- Because Amby hammock incline is adjustable there is always an increased risk of baby rolling to the side. Hushamok incline is not adjustable. The slight incline has been calculated to prevent any risk of baby rolling to the sides of the hammock.
- Amby recommends using their hammock for a baby up to maximum of 9 months old. Amby recommends their hammock for peak reflux use at 4 months of age. Hushamok recommends babies STOP using our hammock when baby rolls, sits up or at maximum weight of 22 pounds, which is consistent with a 4-6 month old baby.
- Hushamok recommends using our hammock for newborn sleep so that babies can adjust to the hammock environment.
- Amby hammocks are a closed loop design. Hushamok's open design promotes airflow and allows for easy access to baby.
- Hushamok utilizes an EVA insert at the bottom of the hammock that provides structure and form. This EVA base cradles baby from the side minimizing a roll potential. In addition the support of the EVA prevents babies from spinal compression, which can compromise babies breathing. This is a main reason why it is not advised for babies to sleep in car seats and swings. Hushamok’s design means that a baby has a flat spine while still supporting baby in a safe and secure environment. The unique design reduces strain on baby’s spine and nerves by maintaining the natural primary curve of babies back.
- Amby Hammocks have minimal back support, which, could compromise babies breathing, and spinal support. Hushamok’s design and the addition of the EVA foam insert conform to babies shape and prevent any dipping in the middle or rolling to the sides.
- Hushamok recommends all babies in our baby hammock be swaddled to prevent movement and rolling.
- Amby baby hammocks use a coiled spring in their hammocks. Hushamok baby hammocks use a leafspring, which provides an undulating motion that does not jerk in its upward movement. The jerking in a coiled spring could contribute to the shifting and movement of a baby in the Amby hammock.
- Amby uses a foam mattress. Hushamok uses a poly-filled mattress that allows for better airflow.
- Amby uses a mix of non-organic cotton and nylon mesh. Hushamok uses breathable organic cotton with no nylon materials.
We hope this will alleviate your concerns but please don’t hesitate to contact us should you have any other questions.

JPMA Information
Whether you manufacture, sell, promote, or buy baby products, be confident they are designed and built with safety in mind. JPMA is proud to provide a certification program that demands quality, safety and functionality. The best juvenile products are JPMA Certified!
Since its inception in 1976, the JPMA Certification Program continues to grow and play an important role in the juvenile products industry. Currently, more than 2,000 products are JPMA Certified in 20 categories!
ASTM International (formerly The American Society for Testing & Materials) develops and publishes the standards. JPMA manufacturers, retailers, other industry members, consumer groups and staff from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) are involved in the development of the standards.
The JPMA Certification Seal on a product tells consumers this product has been verified as conforming to the requirements established by ASTM, through independent laboratory testing and follow-up on-site inspection of the manufacturer's production line. The manufacturers that participate in the JPMA Certification Program are held to high standards and are obligated to meet those principles with every product. Our symbol of certification is a symbol of confidence that the juvenile products have met these performance standards. This confidence extends to customers in the buying decisions they make.
Both ASTM and the CPSC work well with and understand the needs of manufacturers, retailers and the consumer. Together they have encouraged voluntary collaborative actions among stakeholders to address safety requirements.
Independent standards organizations and the safety standards developed in cooperation with industry experts result in some of the best hazard-based standards that ensure today's parents may be comfortably secure in the safe use and selection of their juvenile products.
In a 2007 Senate hearing on the reauthorization of the CPSC, authorities cited an 84% and 89% reduction in fatalities and injuries due to the establishment and effectiveness of ASTM Standards for baby walkers and cribs, respectively.
JPMA's members and certified manufacturers are committed to providing the best products possible. Testaments to that pledge are the continual adjustments and additions to the Certification Program. JPMA asks manufacturers to remain vigilant and provide consumers with the security and knowledge that will keep their children safe. And by carrying JPMA certified products, retailers show their support of the program and care for their customer. By promoting the program, industry publications take that extra step in providing consumers with the best and most up-to-date information available.
JPMA is proud to provide a certification program that demands only the best in quality, safety and functionality. That's why JPMA urges all parents to look for the JPMA Certification Seal on products and packages when shopping for baby.
Demand the best... the best are JPMA Certified!
